New Region Guide Coming

Post by Curulon » Thu Jul 27, 2017 2:06 pm

So, in the announcement for the AiME Loremaster's Screen and Eaves of Mirkwood, Jon mentioned they're working on a new region guide for TOR, in addition to Oaths of the Riddermark and Laughter of Dragons.

I wonder what it could be. Western Eriador? Gondor?

I was just speculating about that, myself. It might be, in order of likelihood:

1. Gondor.
2. Western Eriador (including the Shire?), Ered Luin, Lindon and the Gulf of Lune.
3. Dorwinion and the Sea of Rhûn.
4. Haradwaith (possibly including Harondor, Near Harad, Far Harad, Umbar and Khand). Or is this too large a region?
5. Mordor (an alternative for inclusion of Khand).

I think it's almost certainly 1 or 2, as the Adventurer's Companion already has Men of Minas Tirith and Dwarves of the Blue Mountains. I'd say Gondor is more likely, as it's somewhere people are much more familiar with from the books, and would therefore be more in demand, making it an obvious next choice. But who knows?

I'd love to see Dorwinion and Rhûn, but I don't think that's likely to happen until they've at least covered all the lands the Fellowship visit, except maybe Mordor.

I'd guess that Western Eriador would close the Eriador zone and allow the developers to move to other regions. Although The Shire is surely a hard bone for a writer.

Whatever it is, it will be good. Rhovanion still holds my heart.

I would think the next region guide will be Gondor.

With some Mass Battle rules.

And other goodness.

I'd love to see Gondor next for sure - with a collection of new rules about Sieges and Ships. There are plenty of dark corners in the White Mountains too. Room also for the Rangers of Ithielien; Knights of Dol Amroth and all the smaller sub-regions of Gondor. (It doesn't take long to invent a shedload of work for somebody else to do does it? )

It would be so easy to consider the far south lands with this - but that whole book would be a monster. Perhaps there should be a separate region guide for Mordor, Harad and the great East lands - where the Blue wizards disappeared- instead?

Not sure if this is the right place to mention this: but if the Lake Town supplement were to be updated it would be a bonus to have a few small adventures added to that to give the updated book the same feel as the Bree book has. I'd even go further and suggest three short introductory style adventures based around Esgaroth. One that uses Combat skills only, a second that is resolved using only Encounter rules and a final adventure that is essentially a journey. It's just an idea to have something to do for new players to use so they can gather the basics of the three main activities without learning the mechanics of all three in one go.
