The Hall of Fire - issue 1 Released!

Post by tomcat » Mon Sep 18, 2017 8:59 pm

Per the request of Mr. Hodgson, the webzine must be taken down from circulation due to the imagery used. I cannot say, right now, if we will put the file back up.

Thank you for your interest.

A couple things to say...

1) I tried to make DrivethruRPG the resource for storing and delivering the new webzine to our community. It turns out that you cannot do that unless you are working with the open gaming license material that they support. So, I will be using GOOGLE Drive for storage and delivery. I am not sure if Google has a daily (or monthly) limit on bandwidth for downloading, but it is the best I can do at the moment. If we see a great response to the webzine than perhaps we will look into our own space on the internet.

2) As stated in the previous HOF thread - we were very busy getting the first issue out. I was still writing material as of late last week, and then trying to get it to the proof-readers. Well needless to say, we got through all of the material except a portion of the mini-adventure. I thought about holding up the release, but I do not want to see any interest thus far bleed off due to late delivery.

So, we would ask that if you see any blatant issues with the mini-adventure (text, grammar, etc.), or if a part of it needs better clarification, please send us a note to HOFsubmissions@gmail.com. If you are aable to send a copy of the page from the HOF, with the challenges highlighted, that would be fantastic.

I promise this will not be the norm. With issue two, we will have the better part of three months to work.

Thanks and we hope you enjoy the first issue!

I just skimmed through the Hall, but I have to say:

- great design and layout! Really good and inline with official material... (as did many other fan-based materials in their own ways)
- what an ambitioned adventure! You really understated the adventure, because it is neither "mini" in amount of text, nor in theme..!

An impressive first issue and I look forward to the following ones, if you keep up that quality.

So much for now (late at night).

Edit in the light of day:
I was very surprised about the amount of art in the webzine, but of course I did not know, that you did not have any permissions... (altough I wondered if/how you got permission to use that much, from different sources).

The design used by you was not an absolute copy (although it reads like this, somewhere below). And there are serveral fan made materials in this forum, using at least something as similar to the official desing as your design was. So I thought about that, but my opinion stands: It was a good design.

From my personal expierence: I produced serval RPG-books for private use. Of course in those is much art and some texts, I never got permission to use (not even tried to get), because I knew it would and could not have been given by the owners.
So I can use those "beautiful" versions of the books only for myself and my real-life RPG-groups. But I created versions without those not permitted parts and art, which can be used and spread by anybody...
Are they looking as great, as the personal ones I use myself? Definitly not!
Are they useless because of that? Absolutely not!

So what I am trying to say is: If you can not produce a webzine with so much art, as you would like, this is not that bad. Almost noboby, not even Cubicle7 can produce that much art for their books, as they would like to use (because it is always costly in one way or the other and a professional book created to be sold is a calculated product...)..!
So just get used to the concept, of more text and less art. Try to find art, that is allowed for public use (for exsample old paintings wich belong to all mankind, now), and if you do not find that much, use less. Your webzine will not suffer from that on the long run. At least not, if the texts are good ;)

You've used an awful lot of my art without permission or credit. Please remove it from your publication. Thank you.

@Tomcat

It did look very interesting during a swift perusal last night. It seems that it would be a pity for the Hall of Fire Webzine to come to an end so abruptly, over a misunderstanding about art.
I would like you to continue with your efforts.

And if I might add some advice from personal experience as an editor myself: Ask any author/artist whose work(s) you plan to use beforehand, obtain his/her permission and give proper credit (preferrably on the artwork). If you can't get this permission for whatever reason - do not use this artist's work! Anything else is not only an infringement, but also deeply disrespectful to the artist.
The same holds true for design pieces like layout (e.g. duplicating TOR's layout 1:1).
All this IMHO of course.

If it isn't going to get re-released then the contributors/editors could simply post the content in threads here. That way the community here could at least get some value and peoples' contributions aren't wasted.

Having edited two articles, I agree. They were pretty interesting and I think quite a few people would enjoy them.

Give me some time, everyone.

I am stripping the issue of art and any content that Jon advised.

It won't be pretty, but you all can have it.

Thanks!
