Words of the Wise intro
Words of the Wise intro
Hi all,
just been looking over the adventure Words of the Wise. The introduction alludes to another adventure i the text:
"they were tasked
with investigating rumours of a shadowy figure
seen visiting the vicinity of Dol Guldur. The company
bonded during the arduous trek to the fallen fortress,
and during the long vigil that followed. Finally
observing the figure they had sought, they disrupted
its attempts to enter the keep, but did not get close
enough to uncover the being’s identity. They did feel
its dread power, which overcame them, forcing them
to flee. Recovering their courage in the cold light of
day, they steeled themselves to resume watch, but
did not catch another glimpse of the figure."
Does this story exist in another adventure or is this just made up to give some context?

Re: Words of the Wise intro
It is made up.
The adventure whas created for a Gen Con demo of the game, and this introduction was added to give some context to the players.

Thanks. Thats what I thought.
Re: Words of the Wise intro
I weaved the intro into the Fellowship Phase in my campaign when the PCs decided to spend it placing a watch over Dol Guldur. It fitted perfectly as it was during the Winter when Sauron declared in Mordor and sent three of his Nazgul north to reclaim the fortress.

Re: Words of the Wise intro
When I first ran this adventure (my first for TOR), I briefly read this and we rolled right into the adventure proper.
Then something like a year went by until we played again. And when I recapped what had happened, I made a much bigger deal of this portion. I told my players that - even though we never played through this - it would have likely had a very significant effect on their characters, and would have been one of the most impactful of their lives.

Adventure Summaries for my long-running group (currently playing through The Darkening of Mirkwood/Mirkwood Campaign), and the Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Re: Words of the Wise intro
When I ran this, I ran a Journey from Rhosgobel to Dol Guldur (and it was one of the most miserable and unpleasant experiences of the characters' lives, but the players loved it) and then ran the watch itself as a Fellowship Phase in which everyone took the Undertaking "Watch on Dol Guldur," which I based on an Undertaking someone else on here created and posted, for the same purpose. (Unfortunately, I don't have time to search for the other thread, at the moment.) I had each player describe an interesting/exciting/intense/scary incident that happened to them while they kept watch for about a month, then ran a partially narrated, partially rolled encounter with the "mysterious figure" (which I decided to have be one of the nazgul, although technically it was still a bit early for that) and then glossed over the Journey back. They made it back to Rhosgobel just before the first snows of winter, and were invited by Radagast to stay there over the winter, so they are sort of having two Fellowship Phases back to back, but since they didn't have as much say as usual about what happened in the first one, I figured that was fine.

A quick look in the Palantir suggests this was uhu79, at viewtopic.php?f=7&t=6253. Good stuff...Random221B wrote: ↑Wed Nov 29, 2017 11:27 pm... a Fellowship Phase in which everyone took the Undertaking "Watch on Dol Guldur," which I based on an Undertaking someone else on here created and posted, for the same purpose. A Palantir for TOR: search forum discussions (both current and archived) and beyond...
Re: Words of the Wise intro
Thanks for this.
I started a new adventuring phase with my characters last night. I threw a bunch of hooks to see where they wanted to go and the have ended up taking on a job for The Master of Laketown which will see them travelling north into The Waste, but they were also very keen to end their adventuring phase with a visit to Radagast to get some information. So I can see this Adventuring phase ending in that area, so that undertaking will work a treat.
