Really will be interesting to see how C7 go with depiction of Balrog. I mean, will it be (a) or (b)

I'm sure the C7 design team have it all in hand.

Nah, black with black numbers. You can never have too much... BLACK!

Just vary the reflectivity between the two blacks.

I’m reminded of one Abstract painter that did all his work with white paint on a white canvas. The beauty was on the textures and the patterns that they created. Of course, that was seeing it in person... I imagine it would have been less impressive in a magazine or on a website.

I was reading this book to my 4-year old:

in which the younger sister has an invisible friend, Soren Lorenson. In a few of the pictures there's a blank spot (e.g., in between the two sisters on the sofa) where Soren Lorenson is supposedly sitting.

My son claimed he could see the invisible friend and I kept nodding and saying, "Uh-huh..." but he kept pointing. Eventually I realized that he was in fact there, in a white that had a slightly different reflectivity from the rest of the page. You could only see him by angling the book to the light. Soooo cool.

What would be freaking awesome is black dice with some sort of flickering LED inside that causes the numbers to appear like flames burning from within.

Also, I completely expect to see a picture of a Balrog with large black projections spread behind it that are completely ambiguous as to whether they are actual wings or just a cast shadow.

What about a witch-nose? (You'd perhaps (not) be amazed by the amount of hatemail I got for giving a Great Orc a witch-nose...)
How you dare!! Tolkien was very specific in his lore about orc noses!!!

Sometimes I yearn for a time with less mail, less social networks, and less customer entitlement

I think, and I have little evidence unfortunately, that it's not that there was less, just it was harder for other folks to hear it. People certainly wrote letters to the editors of various publications to gripe about perceived deficiencies, but the effort involved and the gate-keeping of the publisher kept such things to a dull roar.
