Some basic Weapon questions!
Some basic Weapon questions!
Hello! I'm new to The One Ring (and RPGs in general (I've never played one before)), and I just have a couple questions about Weapon skills. I had previously typed up three well-written, in depth questions, but when I hit preview all of my writing was lost, and my patience went with it. I'm going to make this brief.
Q#1. If I get put the Grevious Quality on a spear, and later replace that spear with a Cultural Reward Spear weapon, did I end up wasting the Grevious Quality on my original spear, or does it pass over to the Cultural Reward?
Q#2. I can only carry three weapons, right? So if I have more than three Weapon skills, I must choose which weapons I would like to carry?
Q#3. When I get a Cultural Reward like Dalish Longbow (great bow) but don't have a Weapon Skill for great bow, do I automatically get one? Or do I need to buy one via Experience Points?
Q#4. Experience Points can only be spent during Fellowship, right? I'm pretty sure, but I want to be absolutely sure.
I ended up answering a lot of my own questions while writing this, but these are the ones that remain!

Re: Some basic Weapon questions!
#1: Yes, it passes over. There’s a way you can ‘return’ a Quality to unlock abilities of magical war gear but you can’t lose something you’ve paid for.
#4: Experience Points (and Advancement Points) are spent during the Fellowship phase. Some special things (like searching a Hoard for magical war gear will allow you to spend XP in the Adventuring phase.
#3: No free skills. You’ll either need to have a Cultural group skill or invest XP into learning how to wield that Great Bow.
Hope that helps!

It's really up to each gaming group how this plays out but you certainly shouldn't lose the XP you invested in the initial weapon. Personally, if I was LM and a player did this, I'd just let him transfer such a quality to the new weapon immediately.
Yep. In general. There are special circumstances that come up outside that but they are rare. Can only think of the Treasure Rules in Rivendell of the top of my head.
You need to spend XP on getting the weapons skill, you don't automatically get a rating in it just because you purchase the Cultural Reward.

Re: Some basic Weapon questions!
You can carry as many as you want, as long as you remember to add their Encumbrance.
Obiously, it doesn't make sense to carry weapons you don't have skills in.
And, again, you probably don't need to carry different weapons, except one for missile and one for melee.
The most usual amount of weapons carried is two (1 missile and 1 melee).
You'll see that, in TOR, it isn't really necessary to have a sword and an axe, for example. You usually focus on one of them and only carry one.
Re: Some basic Weapon questions!
Correct. Unless you're using Mr. Hodgson's favorite rule of all time: Dual Wielding from the Adventurer's Companion!!

...unless you start discussing the existence or not of Balrog wings, that is.
